New Weight Loss Methods
The current obsession with maintaining a perfect body mass is a relatively new development. In days gone by, the human body's ability to store extra calories as fat helped people to survive in times of famine and food shortage. Fast forward to present day, those in developing countries are no longer faced with these deprivations. The outcome is that there are many overweight people, despite heavy pressure to be thin. People in the United States, especially, are working overtime to eliminate fat. Crazy diets, hardcore exercise, surgery, and even fat-melting injections called lipodissolve. Anything goes!

Our understanding of weight loss, fat loss and nutrition is constantly evolving. Fad diets - usually in the form of eating plans that advocate low caloric intake and the elimination of entire categories of food - often have little scientific basis and little support in the form of scientific research to demonstrate their efficacy. A diet's popularity is often a result of anecdotal success promoted in infomercials, celebrity endorsements, and suspect claims of short-term weight loss.
A more successful approach for people with moderate amounts of fat to lose includes simple long-term solutions that incorporate decreased caloric intake, increased physical activity, and some form of behavior modification. Recent studies have also shown that social support is very important when it comes to keeping the weight off.
Additionally, there has been an increase in U.S. public policy initiatives to support fat reduction and weight loss, including the introduction of legislation to regulate the fast food industry, fund after school programs that encourage physical activity, and prohibit the most problematic ingredients in restaurant cooking. In New York City, for example, an ordinance passed in late-2006 bans city restaurants from using most artificial trans fats in their cooking.
For individuals who are considered morbidly obese, weight reduction is a problem that usually cannot be solved through diet, exercise, and behavior modification. Recent advances in weight loss surgery are making it a more viable alternative for those with 100 pounds or more to lose. Weight loss surgery is a general term that describes a number of different procedures, the most common being gastric bypass surgery and LAP-band surgery, used to restrict caloric intake or prevent calorie absorption or a combination of both. While in some cases extremely effective, even the least invasive surgical weight loss procedure, such as LAP-band surgery, has its risks. Finding a qualified surgeon who has extensive experience and offers a full range of support services (nutrition consultations, behavior modification classes) is the key here.

In contrast, many people appear to be at a healthy weight and look good, but are dissatisfied with their fat distribution. The unsatisfied are turning to cosmetic surgery to remove small pockets of fat that can't be affected by diet or exercise.
For those who are not generally dissatisfied with their weight and are looking for spot fat reduction, liposuction may be a reasonable alternative. In liposuction, fat deposits beneath the skin are removed using a hollow steel tube and a surgical vacuum. General, local, or twilight anesthesia is used on patients. The action of liposuction is somewhat akin to the spot reduction promised (but not delivered) by exercise gadgets. In fact, liposuction is not a weight reduction tool (it is unsafe to remove more than eight pounds of fat via liposuction in a day) but specifically a fat reduction one.
Lipodissolve is a non-surgical, targeted fat removal treatment. Unlike liposuction, which can remove many pounds of fat, lipodissolve can only eliminate small volumes of fat deposits from very specific areas of the body. People worldwide are getting these drug injections to smooth out their love handles, backs of arms, thighs, and buttocks. The most common lipodissolve drugs are a combination of phosphatidylcholine and sodium deoxycholate (PC/DC), which are injected with small needles directly into fatty tissues. According to lipo-dissolve businesses, the fat cells simply melt and are later secreted in the urine. Lipo-dissolve injections take less than an hour to administer, do not require anesthesia, and side effects are minimal.

While lipo dissolve has become tremendously popular, those considering this fat removal treatment should know that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says that PC/DC, "...are unapproved drugs for unapproved uses." The FDA's position is unlikely to change until well-controlled clinical studies demonstrating the safety and efficacy of PC/DC have been conducted and a drug becomes FDA approved for this use. In August 2007, Kansas attempted to pass legislation barring its physicians from giving PC/DC injections. A Kansas court, however, blocked the legislation from taking effect while the Kansas State Board of Healing Arts solicits public opinion and holds further discussion on the merits and dangers of this currently unapproved therapy. Outside the U.S., the cosmetic use of lipodissolve has been banned in Brazil and Canada, and warned against in the UK.

It was a different day and age when it was acceptable to carry around extra fat. Today, whether by diet, exercise, vacuum, or needles, people are attacking fat relentlessly in order to be healthier or just to look good.
